Performing a Speed Test on Linux Server over SSH

There have been many times when I've wanted to find out the speed of a server's connection. Running a ping from your workstation to the server accomplishes nothing when you need to determine the speed of your server's connection to the outside world. I came across a post with the perfect recommendation.
Use CURL and download a large file
Using the command below, will download a 500mb file from a Speedtest server:
curl -o /dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test500.zip
